Mixed bag of results for Israeli windsurfers

Maayan Davidovich consolidates top-five place, but it's a day of frustration for Shahar Zubari.

Shahar Zubari

Shahar Zaubari endured a frustrating second day of action in the RS:X men’s competition at the Marina da Gloria, in Escola Naval.

The 29-year-old, who won bronze in the same competition in Beijing in 2008, ended the first day in ninth place, finishing the first three races in 9th, 17th and 20th place.

However, in Tuesday’s second trio of races, he finished the fourth race in 22nd place, didn’t finish the fifth, before finishing the sixth and final race of the day in 19th, meaning he finished the second day in 20th place overall.

The position of the finishes get added together after 12 races, with the top ten windsurfers – those who have collated the fewer points – going through to the final medal race, in which double points are awarded.

The second day of action on the women’s competition saw another encouraging trio of races from Maayan Davidovich, despite having to contend with difficult conditions in light wind.

Having gone into day two in seventh place overall following the first three races, she finished the fourth race in 11th place, fifth in fourth and the fifth and final one of the day in third, meaning she sits overall in 5th place, halfway through the first 12 races. As is the case with the men’s competition, at the end of the 12 races, the top ten qualify for the medal race, in which double points are awarded, with points tallied up in the same fashion.

position in races get added together, with the aim to have the lowest score possible.
