Benjamin Netanyahu received a surprise welcome when he touched down at New Delhi’s airport on Sunday afternoon – by his Indian counterpart.

Narendra Modi greeted Netanyahu with a hug, before lifting his arm in the air for the assembled media. The Israeli PM’s first visit to the country, with him being accompanied by his wife Sara, the six-day visit will see him visit Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Agra as well as meeting Indian President Ram Nath Kovind.

A reciprocal visit, following the visit of Modi last July, the pair will spent the entire trip together, apart from the last day on Thursday when Netanyahu flies to Mumbai.

After landing earlier, the two leaders went to a square in the Indian capital to visit a memorial to Indian soldiers who took part in the battle to liberate Haifa from the Turks in 1918. Previously named as Teen Murti Chowk, it will now be called Teen Murti Chowk Haifa.
