New Barnet mayor to boost Kisharon

The newly-installed mayor of Barnet has selected Kisharon as one of the beneficiaries of his charity appeal.

Melvin Cohen, who this week became the first councillor for 30-years to embark on a second term as the borough’s first citizen, announced that funds raised during his term will be split between the charity, which supports members of the Jewish commumity with learning disabilities, and the Mayor of Barnet’s Armed Forces Welfare Fund to help returning servicemen injured in conflict.

The 63-year-old, whose chaplain will be Edgware United’s Rabbi David Lister, said: “I’m delighted that my mayoral appeal will be supporting these two extremely worthy causes and hope to make a real difference to the hundreds helped by Kisharon as well as to many of our borough’s war heroes through this special fund.” Cohen last served as mayor in 2002-3 when his charity appeal raised a record 250,000 for the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice.

Kisharon Chief Executive Dr Beverley Jacobson said:  “The Mayor’s support will be very helpful in bringing Kisharon to the attention of those people who need our services as well as helping us to raise essential funds.  We wish Councillor Melvin Cohen every success in his new role.”
