A new rabbi has been inducted at the Ilford Federation Synagogue, after his appointment was announced in December.

Birmingham-raised Rabbi David Singer – who arrived in Essex via Israel and Northern Ireland – was introduced to the community on Sunday, with a “lovely reception” following the speeches.

Singer spent 40 years in Israel after serving as an ambulance driver in the IDF and helping to found emergency response group Hatzolah, but moved back to the UK in 2013, serving as Rav of Belfast.

A trained sofer, mohel and shochet, the Federation has said Singer “brings a wealth of experience” to a community he recently praised as “vibrant and full of growth”.

The Ilford Federation moved to new premises in 2014 and has expressed delight in its growing attendance, saying it had given “a tremendous boost to the kehillah”.
