A new senior rabbi at Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue was announced this week, as the newly-merged progressive community prepares for a changing of the rabbinic guard next year.

Rabbi Mark Goldsmith, who joins after 12 years at Alyth Synagogue, will commence his new employment in the summer. The shul’s two current Senior Rabbis Daniel Smith and Steven Katz will both be retiring around the same time.

The synagogue praised their “huge contribution” and “very significant achievements”, saying Goldsmith would be continuing in a long line of distinguished rabbis.

EHRS was formed from a merger of Edgware & District Reform Synagogue and Hendon Reform Synagogue two years ago, celebrating their first combined High Holy Days last year.

Alyth chair Russell Baum said Goldsmith had been “an integral part” of the shul, adding: “We wish him and his family well in the next exciting stage of his career.”

Joint EHRS chairs Stephen Garfinkel and Phillip Bright said, “We are excited to have Mark Goldsmith join our vibrant community… We wish him a hearty Mazeltov and look forward to welcoming him and his family to EHRS.”
