New Tel Aviv museum to showcase ‘Jewish achievement’
Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the huge new project was bankrolled by a Canadian Jewish philanthropist
A huge new museum showcasing “Jewish achievement” designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry is being planned for Tel Aviv.
The project would be bankrolled by a foundation set up by the late Canadian Jewish philanthropist Israel Asper, which has already financed the $350 million Canadian Museum for Human Rights.
The new Tel Aviv museum, on the proposed Ibn Gvirol extension to the north of the city, is still in the planning stages, but authorities have been given details of the building, which would cover 10,000 square metres.
Mayor Ron Huldai has stressed the importance of the renovated area having “an institution that’s an icon”.
While Israeli municipal authorities are yet to give the go-ahead, Canadian-born Gehry, who designed the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, has already been lined up.
He will be hoping to make it ‘second time lucky’ in Israel, after he withdrew his support for a Museum of Tolerance in Jerusalem in 2010, after city planners revealed that it would be build on the site of an old Muslim cemetery.
