An annual search for the brightest and best teaching and leading in Jewish schools is today launched by Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS), in association with Jewish News.

Three new categories have been announced for the fifth Jewish Schools Awards, taking place in 2020, including a Curriculum Collaboration Award, Volunteering Award and innovation honour called Beyond the Classroom.

The latter recognises a teacher or group of teachers who have initiated a programme to take students out of the classroom in order to offer them a broader range of learning experiences.

This could include engagement with the wider community and initiatives that have contributed to a deeper understanding of British values.

The Curriculum Collaboration Award refers to collaboration between Jewish Studies and secular studies. It recognises a team of Jewish or Hebrew studies and secular studies teachers who have implemented a joint initiative to enrich teaching and learning across both Jewish and secular curriculum areas.

The Volunteer Award honours school-based volunteering, recognising an individual or group of volunteers, governors, parents or others, who are not employed by the school, but who have significantly contributed and improved aspects of school life.

The judges this year include consultant paediatrician Michael Markiewicz, family lawyer Naomi Greenwood and Leonie Lewis, vice-president of the United Synagogue and former head of the Jewish Volunteering Network, and Kate Goldberg, Chief Executive, Maurice Wohl Charitable Foundation.

The awards will be announced in February and are being run by PaJeS, a division of the Jewish Leadership Council.

Its director Rabbi David Meyer said: “It is hard to believe that it is already our fifth year! This year we are planning our biggest ever event. We have introduced some exciting new categories to our awards and look forward to receiving online nominations for these.

“We very much look forward to celebrating the exceptional talent of our school staff and look forward to sharing this exciting communal event with you all.”
