Israel’s Opposition leader is under investigation for corruption after the country’s attorney-general ordered a fraud squad probe into alleged violations of campaign finance laws.

Isaac Herzog, who leads Zionist Union, a merged group including Israel’s Labor party, said political opponents and “frustrated operatives” were behind the “slander,” but added that he would “cooperate fully” with officers.

“It is political slander that Likud and frustrated activists tried to disseminate before the [2015] elections, and were denied at the time,” he said. “I’m sure the probe will disprove these strange claims once and for all.”

Herzog is being investigated alongside Interior Minister Arye Dery, who was previously jailed for corruption while he was a minister in the 1990s.
