Palestinian flag put up on school roof after Scotland-Israel match

South Ayrshire Council, the municipality close to Glasgow, has said it is “reviewing external access” to one of the biggest schools in the area after a Palestinian flag was put up on the school’s roof following the Israel-Scotland match last week.

Passers-by on Saturday saw the flag flying from the rooftop of the landmark Ayr Grammar Primary School, formerly Ayr Academy. It was not clear at the time whether those responsible had entered the school from inside, or had climbed onto the roof from outside. 

The flag was removed on the same day. South Ayrshire Council said that it had established that access to the roof was not gained from inside the school — meaning there was no security breach to the building. However, a spokesman said it was reviewing how those who put up the flag had climbed to the roof of the school. 

Police Scotland said: “Around 1pm on Saturday, September 5, 2020, police were made aware that a flag had been erected on the roof of a school in Ayr. No criminality has been established and, following liaison with the local authority, no further police action is required.”
