Israel trio suffer early Wimbledon exits

Israel’s two women players were both beaten in their first round singles matches at Wimbledon on Tuesday afternoon.

Glushko, making her first appearance in the main draw at SW19 was up against last year’s runner-up, German Sabine Lisicki on centre court, though proved to be no match for the number 19 seed, who has reached the quarter-finals of the tournament on the last three ocassions.

The Israeli was broken in the opening game of the match, and with the German then holding her serve found herself 2-0 down within minutes. Service games were then exchanged, before Glushko broke serve to get back to 4-2. However, unable to hold hers in the next game, found herself 5-2, before Lisicki served out to take the first set 6-2 after just 35 minutes.

The second set started as the first did, with Glushko broken in the the first game. Goign to serve, she was then broken again to find herself 4-1 behind. And needing no second invitation, the German ruthlessly took the final two games – which was only punctuated by a moment of light relief when Glushko accidently picked out the umpire’s chair with a wayward shot, the German wrapping up the match in 57 minutes.

Meanwhile, Shahar Peer resumed her match against Caroline Wozniacki, which was halted due to rain last night. Resuming 3-6, 0-2 down, the match only lasted a further four games as Peer lost the second set 6-0.

Israel’s last singles representative was Dudi Sela, though he went the same way as Peer and Glushko, as he was beaten in straight sets by Mikhail Kukushkin, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Jonathan Erlich is Israel’s last player left in the tournament, he’ll be competing in the men’s doubles competition.
