Peer suffers second round exit in Birmingham

Shahar Peer crashed out of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham on Wednesday afternoon after being beaten in a three-set thriller.

Taking on the number nine seed Shuai Zhang, the Chinesewoman took the first sset 6-3, though Peer bounced back in the second, taking it 6-3 to level the match. However, having just found herself back in the match, she then all but threw it away as she found herself 4-0 down in the third and deciding set. Although she then managed to pull it back to 5-2, it was too little, too late, as Zhang held her serve to win 6-2.

There was though a win for Jonathan Erlich, who was in men’s second round doubles action at the Aegon Championships at Queens. Teaming up with South African Kevin Anderson, they beat Philipino Treat Huey and Great Britain’s Dominic Inglot 6-7, 6-4, 10-4. In the quarter-finals, they will either face the world’s number one seeds, Americans Bob and Mike Bryan, or GB’s Jamie Murray and Australian John Peers.
