Police make new arrest over nine swastikas daubed in Camden

Police have made a new arrest over the Nazi swastika daubings sprayed close Belsize Square synagogue last weekend.

At a meeting with communal leaders on Thursday senior Metropolitan Police officials confimed they had arrested a new suspect over the incident.

Sources told Jewish News that police seemed confident they had detained the person responsible for spraying nine Swastika symbols in the north London area on Saturday evening.

“Police were keen to reassure the Jewish community that they had acted efficiently over the matter,” said a source.

“They put a lot of resourses into catching the culprit as they realised how distrubing this sort of incident can be.”

On Monday, police were forced to admit that a teenage suspect arrested on Saturday evening, shortly after the graffiti had been reported to the Community Security Trust control room, was not the right person.

The 17 year-old was released without charge.

In a statement released on Thursday the Met confirmed: “Detectives investigating criminal damage to a number of buildings in Camden have arrested a man.

“The man, aged in his early 40s, was arrested on Wednesday, 3 November on suspicion of racially aggravated criminal damage.
“He has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and remains in the care of medical professionals.”

They added that at this time police are not looking for anyone else in connection with this investigation.
