Prince Charles honours Lord Rothschild with prestigious interfaith prize

Prince Charles has honoured the interfaith contribution made by Lord Rothschild by presenting the peer with the Council of Christians and Jews’ 2019 Bridge Award.

The Prince of Wales, who is rumoured to be planning to visit Israel next month, paid tribute to banker and philanthropist Lord Jacob Rothschild at a central London ceremony last week.

Rothschild’s family helped establish the CCJ in 1942, as the world began learning about the Holocaust, with Anthony de Rothschild a member of the organisation’s executive committee at its inception, and Edmund de Rothschild later treasurer.

The dynasty’s current head was honoured last week for “building bridges between business and society as well as between different peoples and communities through his extensive philanthropy work in the UK and Israel”.

The Rothschild Foundation invests in arts, heritage, education and social welfare, and supports projects in Israel aimed at breaking down societal barriers.

Receiving the Award, Lord Rothschild said he was “deeply honoured,” adding: “Now more than ever, the willingness of faith communities to come together for the common good is playing a critical role in healing divisions and building a society in which all can live together with mutual respect.”

CCJ trustee and former Conservative leader Lord Michael Howard said: “We cannot think of a more worthy recipient.”
