Prince William vows to ‘tell his children about the Holocaust’

The Duke of Cambridge told a Kindertransport refugee he would make sure his children are aware of what happened during the Second World Was – as she picked up an MBE for services to Holocaust education.

Vera Schaufeld came to England aged nine in the Kindertransport in 1939 following the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia.

She received an MBE for services to Holocaust education from Prince William today at Buckingham Palace, alongside high-profile celebrities including England striker Harry Kane.

Vera said she was amazed when William told her he would make sure his children would be aware of what had happened and of the Kindertransport.

Schaufeld added: “That was really amazing. It was really incredible to hear it meant something to him and he knew and he understood.”

The National Holocaust Centre and Museum tweeted: “Congratulations to Vera Schaufeld who has been deservedly awarded an MBE for her inspirational and unerring services to Holocaust education.

“Vera helped establish our Centre, which is the only one dedicated to Holocaust remembrance and education in the UK.”

Olivia Marks-Woldman, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust congratulated the refugee, saying “‘We are so pleased Vera has received this thoroughly well-deserved honour. Vera and her late husband Avram both worked with Holocaust Memorial Day Trust for many years, and Vera has generously given so much of her time to share her experiences.

“She is remarkably humble, despite the significant impact she has had on so many people.
