Tributes have been paid to legendary football agent and “proper mensch” Mel Stein, who has died at the age of 77.

The famous advisor, who represented Paul Gasgoigne former England and Spurs star Chris Waddle, passed away on Wednesday following a short illness.

Amongst those paying their respects to Stein was television presenter and judge Robert Rinder who tweeted that the agent had “led my children’s synagogue services and shared his love and joy in Jewish faith with generations.”

Rinder added Stein was “a proper mensch.”

Stein lived in north London with his wife Marilyn, and their two sons Nicky and Paul.

Raised on a council estate, as the son of a barber, Stein grew up without luxuries.

He was educated at the Central Foundation Grammar School in Shoreditch and King’s College London and was recognised as one of the first solicitors to be regarded as a specialist sports lawyer.

He was regularly seen watching Barnet Football Club in action, with the club’s chairman Tony Kleanthous describing the work he did for The Bees as “immeasurable.”

Henry Winter, The Time sports writer said: “Such sad news about Mel Stein. Legendary football agent. Tried to get Lazio to throw in a trout farm for Gazza when he signed.

“Mel was a real character, hugely respected, always good company and even wrote a Top 10 single.

“Thoughts with Mel’s family and friends. RIP.”

A statement by the National League, who stein represented, said: “It is with great sadness that The National League can announce the passing of Mel Stein after a short illness.

“Mel was an extraordinary professional and served as the League’s Legal Advisor for many years – he will leave a lasting legacy to the footballing world.

“As well as being instrumental in the League’s commercial activity, he was also attributed as being one of the first specialist sports lawyers.

“Mel represented a number of global stars including Chris Waddle, Paul Gascoigne and Alan Shearer and many others.”
