Rabbi co-signs ‘Brexit prayer’ as UK triggers Article 50
Reform rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner is a signatory to the Brexit prayer, alongside representatives from five other faiths
A senior Reform rabbi has co-signed a “Brexit prayer” together with Hindu, Muslim, Christian and Sikh faith leaders, on the day the UK formally started the process of leaving the European Union.
The prayer encourages the five faith communities to love, not fear, the differences between people, and is intended as a call for solidarity.
The five faith representatives are Senior Reform Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner, Bishop of Edmonton Rob Wickham, Imam Qari Asim of Leeds Makkah Mosque, Gurinder Singh Josan of Sikh Council UK, and Councillor Dhruv Patel who founded the City Hindus Network.
The prayer reads: “We are a nation proud of our diversity and strong values of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance. Let these values flourish as we embark upon the next stage of our journey together… Let our values and our diversity continue to be a beacon of light in the post-Brexit world.”
The five leaders urge their communities to build a “strong, inclusive and compassionate society” in the wake of the UK’s exit from the European Union, reflecting continent-wide concerns that nationalism and populism are on the rise.
