Rare Judaica expected to fetch £30k at auction
Four items to feature at auction this month include a silver Torah breastplate and Georgian soup tureen
Highly sought-after judaica, including a silver Torah breastplate and a Georgian silver soup tureen that once belonged to the Montefiore family, could fetch more than £30,000 when they go under the hammer this month.
The four items feature in an auction of Silver and Objects of Vertu at Chiswick Auctions, London, on October 23.
Estimated to fetch up to £8,000, the Torah breastplate, made from parcel-gilt sterling silver, dates to 1900 and is intricately decorated with flowers and leaves throughout. It complements a George V antique sterling silver pair of Torah finials from 1910, estimated to fetch £6,000, which were presented by the honorary workers of Dalston Synagogue, to mark the building’s 25th anniversary.
Other items up for auction include a George IV antique sterling silver soup tureen from 1823, featuring a coat of arms above the motto, All For The Best, which was produced in celebration of the marriage of Sir Moses Montefiore’s sister Justina to his brother-in-law, Benjamin Cohen, in 1819.
Experts predict it could fetch £12,000 to £16,000 when it goes under the hammer.
A similar tureen bearing the marriage arms of Abraham Montefiore and Henriette Rothschild from 1837 fetched $50,000 (£38,302) at Christie’s New York in 2012.
Meanwhile, a George III antique sterling silver meat dish from 1766 is expected to fetch up to £1,600.
The oval-shaped dish once belonged to Sampson Eardley, the 1st Baron Eardley, who was the son of Jewish banker Sampson Gideon. His father, credited as one of the founders of the London Stock Exchange, was also a supporter of the Jew Bill of 1753, which allowed for the naturalisation of Jews in Britain.
