Rishi Sunak pledges to ‘always stand’ with community in Rosh Hashanah message

Rishi Sunak has used his Rosh Hashanah message to say he will “always stand with” the Jewish community and he also pledged to “champion the ban on boycotts, divestments and sanctions, and fight antisemitism in any form.”

In new statement released ahead of the festival, the prime minister said:”To Jewish families in the UK and around the world, I want to wish you a very Happy New Year.

“British Jews play an integral part in the success of this nation, and I am delighted the vibrant and diverse Jewish faith continues to thrive across the country.

“I have personally seen how Jewish organisations operate to the highest standards in caring for those who may be vulnerable and in need. Over the coming year, I will continue to support you in this valuable work.”

He then referenced the government’s long-promised anti-Israel boycott legislation which is currently at committee stage having passed its second reading in the Commons.

“I will always stand with you,” wrote the PM. “You can count on me to keep you safe, to champion the ban on boycotts, divestments and sanctions, and fight antisemitism in any form.

“So as you come together to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, may this coming year be filled with peace and prosperity. L’Shanah Tovah U’Metuka.”

Liberal Democrats leader also issued a Rosh Hashanah message saying: “As our Jewish friends around the country usher in Rosh Hashanah, I want to extend my wishes for a sweet, happy and healthy new year.

“I hope that this is a special time for families and friends to come together, to reflect on the past year, and look excitedly to the future. Shana tovah!”

Labour are expected to release a message from Keir Starmer, who was filmed on last week’s visit to the Independent Jewish Day School Academy in Hendon.
