Ronson Family Foundation gives £890k to Israel sci-tech schools affected by Gaza war

The London-based Gerald and Gail Ronson Family Foundation has donated more than £890k ($1.2 million) to support two schools in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon, one of the communities most affected by rocket fire from the Gaza strip.

The funds will support significant infrastructure and educational upgrades at so-called sci-tech schools Ronson Afridar and Henry Ronson, which focus on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. The schools were set up in the early 1980s by the Ronson family, with the aim of the aim of advancing education in Israel and encouraging students to study key areas deemed vital for 21st century technology.

Situated near the Gaza border, Ashkelon has faced frequent rocket attacks from militant groups, particularly Hamas, including during the ongoing war that began on October 7.

The city’s residents, including students and educators, have endured repeated air raid sirens, physical damage, and emotional strain.

Ronson Afridar school will receive a new state-of-the-art open-air theatre, with seating for up to 1,000 people, whilst the 30-year old structure of Henry Ronson will benefit from architectural and landscaping improvements to the entrance path, outdoor plaza, and main lobby.

Raz Frohlich, chief executive of the Israel Sci-Tech Schools Network said the substantial investment supports their mission to “create a modern, innovative, and positive learning environment that supports individual and group development, while motivating all students toward higher accomplishments. The Ronson Family Foundation has been a loyal partner of ISTS for decades, enabling quality education in Israel’s socio-geographic periphery.”

The Gerald and Gail Ronson Family Foundation, which gives more than £10 million each year in grants and donations, said is “proud to stand with the resilient people of Ashkelon and support the next generation of learners through safe, inspiring, and innovative educational spaces.
