Rubin stuns world number 17 at Australian Open

American teenager Noah Rubin produced one of the performances of Day One at the Australian Open as he upset the 17th seed Benoit Paire to claim his first ever Grand Slam win.

The 19-year-old, who claimed the 2014 Wimbledon boy’s title secured a straight sets 7-6, 7-6, 7-6 win over the Frenchman, though wasn’t getting too carried away with his win. Speaking afterwards, he said: “People have done way better than me at my age, people have won slams at my age so winning one round is not too terrific.”

The New Yorker, who’s ranked 328 in the world, earned a place in the main draw through a wild card entry, and added: “I love being in the spotlight, I hope I don’t come off cocky or arrogant, but I do enjoy playing in the spotlight. I’ve always played my best tennis.”

Rubin will face another Frenchman in the second round, qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Elsewhere, Camila Giorgi’s campaign proved to be a short one as she was beaten 6-4, 7-5 by the world number one Serena Williams.

Tuesday morning sees Israeli Dudi Sela begin his campaign, when he takes on German Benjamin Becker, the match set to be third on Court 15
