Rummikub fundraiser stacks up cash for charity

More than £1,000 was raised for Macmillan Cancer Support and Hatzola at a Rummikub fundraiser in Kenton, with players from across the community coming together to support the two vital causes.

Organised by Standmore resident Simon Last, the event saw 40 people pack into the Harrow Room at Harrow Masonic Centre on June 28, playing the classic Israeli game across ten tables.

Last, 79, was motivated to set up the afternoon after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in January this year. He started chemotherapy in February and said he has been impressed with the support Macmillan provides to patients like himself.

“I’ve been aware of Macmillan Cancer Support since 2002, when Evonne, my late wife, was suffering cancer,” he said. “When I have had my chemotherapy, I’ve noticed they have a lot of flyers and brochures for cancer patients and their families. They are doing a phenomenal job to give vital information to people who have never had cancer and want to ask questions.”

The Belmont synagogue member also noted that he decided to raise money for Hatzola after hearing about the arson attack on their ambulances in Golders Green in March: “That brought tears to my eyes, and I decided I must try to help them by raising some money for them.”
