Say cheese! Create a cake for Shavuot

We’ve joined forces with the United Synagogue and COCO Bakery in Golders Green to give one lucky reader the chance to create a cheesecake while helping the community's vulnerable.

Smoked Salmon cheesecake?

One lucky Jewish News reader is set for an extra sweet – or savoury – Shavuot, by being invited to create a new cheesecake flavour!

Following the roaring success of the paper’s ‘design a doughnut’ competition for Chanukah, this paper has again teamed up with the United Synagogue – with the winning design being sold to support vulnerable members of the community.

Readers are invited to submit their ideas for a new flavour of cheesecake, before the best ideas are selected by judges and put to a public vote.

The winning concept will be made by the new KLBD-supervised COCO Bakery in Golders Green, with its creator winning a gift voucher to spend at the bakery – and of course – their own version of the cake.

Mac-n-cheese…cake

For each cheesecake which is sold, COCO will also make a donation to the work of the United Synagogue’s Chesed department, which supports vulnerable members of the community.

Steven Wilson, Chief Executive of the United Synagogue, said: “We can’t wait to see the wonderful ideas our community will come up with – and of course being able to taste the winning entry at COCO Bakery.”

Jonathan Cohen, owner of Golders Green’s COCO, said: “We are delighted to be partnering with the United Synagogue on this exciting and innovative campaign. Having opened in October 2020, we pride ourselves in being a unique kosher boutique bakery, offering a range of high quality products.

“For our first Shavuot we are thrilled to be giving one lucky member of the community a chance to create a new and innovative flavour to complement our planned range of cheesecakes.”

Michelle Minsky, Head of US Chesed, said it “is committed to the welfare and wellbeing of our members. Over the past year, we have responded to the increased hardship by providing weekly food parcels for those who need it, as well as providing emotional support through our fantastic volunteers.

“We are both delighted and grateful that COCO Bakery have chosen to donate money to us and they can be sure it will be spent where the need is greatest.”

  • To enter, submit your idea via https://theus.org.uk/cheesecake by Monday 26 April ahead of the public vote from Thursday 29 April.
  • Voting will close on Monday 3 May with the winner announced in Jewish News on Thursday 6 May.
