Schnitzels, shredding and Llama Treks add up to family fun on a skiing holiday

Discover uncrowded slopes in the surprisingly affordable Brandnertal in Austria

Forget the shoulder-to-shoulder crowds and eye-watering prices of typical half-term ski trips. This year, our family craved something different: authenticity, affordability, and space to breathe. In the Austrian gem of the Brandnertal in Vorarlberg, where big hitters Lech and St Anton are neighbours, we found it all, nestled within the charming family hotel Lagant.

Owned by a family of natural hosts – the Schwaerzlers, this small but perfectly-formed empire comprises two family hotels and two mountain restaurants that are run with passion, pride, a commitment to sustainability and local foods, and most of all to familes.

No mass-produced experiences here. Imagine villages nestled in picturesque valleys, thoughtful eco-tourism, locals sharing their traditions with genuine warmth, and delicious regional cuisine that warms your soul (Käsespätzle, anyone?). But the real magic happened on the slopes.

Think gentle runs perfect for little skiers (and a good smattering of reds and a black for the die hard skiers too!), uncrowded pistes and scenery that stole our breath away. No elbow-to-elbow battles; just peaceful enjoyment of the winter wonderland.

And for the adrenaline junkies in your crew, the Backyard Snowpark is a must-visit. Thanks to Harry and Stevey, the park’s guardian angels who build and maintain the brilliant jumps and promote a laid-back yet inclusive experience, my two boys spent hours learning tricks and jumps on twin-tips (freestyle skis so you can ski in both directions).

The Lagant itself, presided over by host of all hosts (and expert manager) Sonja Feuerstein, was a haven for relaxed family fun. Our children were either happily entertained in the supervised kids’ club, swimming, or playing (indoor) tennis or football in the vast play area whilst we enjoyed our sunny terrace, a massage or simply time out. Room configurations are with families in mind. All with balconies and with clever extra beds. Sharing has never been easier. The hotel is also spotless! Something even more important when it comes to hosting little ones during peak season.

Huge farm-to-table breakfasts fuelled our adventures, and mouth-watering, freshly-baked cakes greeted us upon arrival for afternoon tea. In the evenings, we gathered around the fireplace in the cozy Alpine lounge, playing Uno and Dobble, although the hotel also offers supervised dinners and breakfasts, ensuring that a holiday is had by all. Even our pickiest eater devoured the melt-in-your-mouth local cheeses, barbecued meats, freshly cooked fish and vibrant vegetable dishes. There was always the kids buffet too – set at a low level for ease of access – with fresh pastas and sauces, schnitzels and more.

Beyond the slopes, we explored charming villages like Bürserberg and Brand and even embarked on a magical llama trek in Montafon – a comfortable 30-minute bus ride away – through the snow, taking in panoramic views whilselearning about local traditions. This is all bookable with the regions’s clever guest card (a valuable addition to any stay in the Brandnertal that gives you free travel and access to a plethora of exciting family activities including magical nighttime tobogganing).

Perhaps the most surprising element of our trip was the affordability. Compared to the usual half-term hotspots, Brandnertal offered exceptional value. We splurged on experiences without breaking the bank, and enjoyed delicious meals without feeling gouged. This made the entire experience even more enjoyable, knowing we weren’t just another wallet on a corporate ski machine.

And the fun doesn’t stop in winter! Come summer, Brandnertal transforms into a lush playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Imagine hikes through meadows bursting with wildflowers, swims in crystal-clear lakes, and soaking up the warm sunshine. Both the Lagant and its more intimate sister property, the Mateera Montafon (also ski-in/ski-out) transform into summer family havens, offering activities and a welcoming atmosphere year-round.

True wonderlands exist beyond the big brands, waiting to be discovered by adventurous families. With easy access by train from Zurich, it’s the perfect choice for a more eco-conscious getaway.
