Scottish Palestine group criticised for ‘zio’ jibe

Anti-Israel group posts derogatory term which the Chakrabarti report recommends should not be used

The Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign (SPSC) has been criticised for using the term “zio” to describe supporters of Israel.

The Sunday Herald newspaper reported that the lobby group used the word on four occasions on its Facebook page.

It was labelled as a “term of abuse” by Labour’s Chakrabarti report into anti-Semitism.

The group’s leader Mick Napier told the newspaper: “I use ‘zio’ because I am hostile to the political ideology of Zionism.

‘Zio is not to be confused remotely with a racist epithet.” Glasgow Friends of Israel said it was “unsurprising” the SPSC used this “vile word”.
