Sculpture of Van Gogh by Jewish artist to be displayed at French hospital
Van Gogh lived in Arles in southern France during the late 19th century, creating an artists’ colony shortly before he died in 1890.
A British Jewish artist is to have his sculpture of Vincent Van Gogh displayed at the hospital in France where the Dutch painter was treated after cutting his ear off.
Anthony Padgett, who has created 80 works around Van Gogh, said he was thrilled to have his bust form part of the 130-year anniversary celebrations.
Van Gogh lived in Arles in southern France during the late 19th century, creating an artists’ colony shortly before he died in 1890, and Padgett’s sculpture incorporates items from the Dutch post-impressionist painter’s life, including a razor blade.
It coincides with a resurgence of interest in Van Gogh and the blockbuster exhibition at Tate Britain of Van Gogh’s work which will celebrate his time in England.
“I have had a life-long interest in art and was struck by how Van Gogh’s work was so unique and distinctive,” said Padgett.
“I wanted to engage in his intensity to gain an insight into his life. When you look into the sculpture’s eyes you get a glimpse into the soul of a deep and intense visionary.”
