Season finale will be all-Raiders cup final

North London Raiders Masters will meet their men’s MGBSFL side in next Sunday’s final of the MMFL/MGBSFL Invitational Trophy.

Raiders kept alive their hopes of a league and cup double after they recorded this ultimately comfortable victory at Rowley Lane.

Gideon Gold, Andrew Wolfin, Lee Cash and James Cartmell were all on target, as they look to add this trophy to the Masters Division One title.

Joint-manager Elan Ovits told jewishnews.co.uk: “I thought we deserved the victory against a resolute Scrabble side. We played some great intricate passing across the pitch and scored some excellent team goals.

“We have a very experienced team who have all played at a descent level for many a year with a competitive mentality to still add trophies to the cabinet. It’s fantastic for a young NLR C to make the final and make it a special club day out for family and friends. However, when that whistle blows for the start of the game, all the niceties will go out of the window and no doubt our experience will shine through to lift yet another trophy. Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing!”

Jon Cohen scored for Scrabble, for whom player-manager Jon Yantin told jewishnews.co.uk: “Raiders were always favourites to win and they played really relaxed confident football which is very difficult to break down.

“We did ok for bursts of 15 minutes here or there, but really they were expected to win and deserved the win. Toby Lustigman shone through for us, but really it was Raiders all the way 

“More importantly however is how this cup is a great advert for Masters football. The skill, technical abilities and competitiveness of masters surprises people when they watch or play against us and I hope that more guys make the step up to keep Masters as a competitive and vibrant league.”

Sam Rose’s side ensured the final will be an all-Raiders affair after the won this eight-goal thriller.

Jordan Nathan scored twice, with David Domb, Alex Sherr and Josh Green also getting on the scoresheet.

Rose told jewishnews.co.uk: “We continue to lay down markers for next season. This end-of-season competition was the perfect opportunity to show what we’re all about and how far the squad has come this season.

“Having gone 1-0 down in the game we showed that same desire to fight for the win, stick to the football we know we can play and grab the game by the scruff of the neck that has served us well in the latter stages of the season.

Special mention to David Domb for his cross cum shot annual goal for the season. The Dombledore strikes again. Well done!”

Looking forward to next season’s final against their Masters side, he added: “I don’t know much about the Master’s team other than they are a very strong squad and we expect a tough game. But we’re a fit and young team and we’ll be using that to our advantage on Sunday.

“It’s great for Raiders to have two teams in the final playing great football and we look forward to pitting ourselves against them.

“For us to win this tournament would mean a huge amount and be rightful justification for the hard work we’re putting in every week. We know this is just the beginning though of this team’s journey and we’ll want more next season and to build on this. But for now we’ll take the 90 minutes next week and give everything for the taste of victory!”

Louis Taylor scored twice for the Greens, with Ben Portnoi scoring their third.
