Sela handed Ferrer test at Wimbledon

Dudi Sela has been handed a tough first round tie at this year’s Wimbledon Championship.

The 31-year-old will be Israel’s sole representative in the singles competition, and he will have to produce one of the performances of his career if he’s to overcome the 13th seed, Spain’s David Ferrer.

Sela, for whom this will be his eighth Championships, reached the fourth round back in 2009, and goes into the tournament on the back of a quarter-final exit at the Nottingham Open, where he was beaten by Italian Andreas Seppi on Thursday,

Elsewhere in the draw, Argentine Diego Schwartzman will face the Netherlands’ Robin Haase.

In the women’s draw, Italian Camila Giorgi faces a daunting task, having been drawn against the second seed, Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.

In the doubles draw, Israeli Jonathan Erlich and GB’S Colin Fleming have been handed a tough opener, with them facing the third seeds, GB’s Jamie Murray and Brazilian Bruno Soares.

Sela will also be competing in the doubles alongside Frenchman Stephane Robert. They take on Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis and Russian Mikhail Youzhny in their first round clash.

American Scott Lipsky and Mexican Santiago González, who were beaten in the semi-finals at Nottingham, face Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis and American Denis Kudla.

Schwartzman is also involved in the doubles, where alongside compatriot Federico Delbonis, they take on GB duo Kyle Edmund and James Ward.

Yshai Oliel will be representing Israel in the junior event, the tournament getting underway on Day 6 of the tournament.
