Sela through to second round at US Open

Dudi Sela claimed only his second Grand Slam win in three years on Wednesday night to set up a daunting second round clash against the world No. 8 Grigor Dimitrov.

The 29-year-old, ranked No. 83 in the world, beat Argentine Carlos Berlocq, ranked 20 places above him, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 in the first round on Wednesday evening. Losing the first set after 24 minutes, he bounced back impressively to seal the win in just under three hours.

However, he will have to produce one of her best ever performances on Friday if he’s to progress at Flushing Meadows, the Bulgarian coming into this tournament on the back of a semi-final appearance at Wimbledon last month.

Earlier on Wednesday, Shahar Peer crashed out of the singles competition, losing her second round clash against Croatian Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. Winning the first set on a tie-break, it then all went downhill for the 27-year-old, losing the second and third sets  6-3, 6-2.

She will though be back on court on Thursday when she and Kiki Bertens begin their doubles campaign, when they take on the eighth seeds Czech Andrea Hlavackova and Jie Zheng from China.

Noah Rubin is also back in action when he and Stefan Kozlov play their first round men’s doubles match against fellow Americans Jared Donaldson and Michael Russell.
