Shapovalov knocked out of US Open

Denis Shapovalov saw his hopes of reaching the quarter-finals at the US Open clinically ended on the Arthur Ashe Court.

The 18-year-old, who was born in Tel Aviv, was competing at his first US Open having won three qualifiers just to make the main round of the competition.

Describing his run in New York as “a dream”, his campaign came to an end on Sunday evening when he was beaten in three sets – each decided by a tiebreak – by the 12th seed, Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta, in a match which lasted just six minutes short of three hours.

His best ever run in a Grand Slam, his only previous appearance at one of the four major tournaments was at Wimbledon earlier this year where he was knocked out in the first round, he is set to shoot up the rankings as a result of his fine performance in New York.

Born to Russian parents, his mother moved to Israel with her coach, where she then started her coaching career. Born in the country along with his brother, the family moved to Canada – who he now represents – when he was 9 months old.
