Sir Captain Tom was ‘an inspirational warrior’, AJEX chair says

Representatives of Jewish HM Armed Forces personnel past and present have paid tribute to the NHS fundraiser Captain Sir Tom Moore following his death from Covid-19 aged 100 this week.

Mike Bluestone, chairman of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women (AJEX), called the centenarian “an inspirational warrior” as he reflected on how he raised millions through his sponsored garden walk in April last year.

“All of us in the AJEX Jewish Veterans community are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of the much loved Captain Sir Tom Moore,” said Bluestone.

“Captain Sir Tom showed great courage not only in war, but also during the ongoing battle against the coronavirus with his demonstration of physical fortitude, proving that age is no barrier to courage and commitment to his regiment and the wider community.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Captain Sir Tom’s family and friends. May this great inspirational warrior and veteran rest in peace.”

Chief Rabbi Mirvis also paid tribute, saying: “Together with so many others, I was deeply inspired by Captain Sir Tom Moore, who deservedly won the affection of the nation. This ‘national treasure’ shone a light of positivity and hope at a time of great darkness and taught us that a single person can truly make a difference.”

During the first national lockdown, Captain Tom decided to walk lengths of his garden – using his walking stick – to raise money for NHS charities. He set out to raise £1,000 but ended up raising £32.8 million.
