Sleepy Cornwall village reinstates “outrageous” ‘Hitlers Walk’ sign

The sleepy fishing village of Mevagissey in Cornwall was this facing a cultural boycott by Jews after a member of the local Jewish community condemned as “outrageous” a decision to reinstate a sign saying “Hitlers Walk”.

Harvey Kurzfield, of Kehillat Kernow, which represents the Jewish community of Cornwall, objected after the parish council ordered a new sign after a ten-year absence.

The village path is named after a local councillor whose manner earned him the nickname ‘Hitler,’ but that was no excuse for Kurzfield, who added: “I would urge Jewish people to boycott the village.”

However Cllr John Daniel said removing the sign was “political correctness gone mad,” adding: “The name goes back to before the war when whoever was in charge of the park was a bit authoritarian. It’s not offensive, it’s just what local people call it.”
