Keir Starmer has acknowledged the community will again welcome the arrival of Rosh Hashanah with a “heavy heart” this year while hostages are still held in Gaza by Hamas.

In his New Year message to the community, the Prime Minister said”This sacred moment invites us to pause, to consider the year gone by, and to look ahead with hope and resolve.

“It is a time for renewal, for family, and for faith”.

“As we welcome the arrival of Rosh Hashanah, I extend my warmest wishes to Jewish communities across the United Kingdom and around the world”

But with the continued captivity of 48 hostages in Gaza, around 20 of whom are still believed to be alive, the PM added:”Yet we do so with a heavy heart while hostages are still held by Hamas.

“I reaffirm our unwavering commitment to peace, and to the safe return of those still held cruelly.”

Starmer also acknowledged the continued problems with antisemitism in the UK.

He said:”At a time when antisemitism and intolerance persist, let me be clear: we stand shoulder to shoulder with the Jewish community.

“We will always challenge hate, and we will always champion the values of inclusion, dignity and respect.

“May this New Year bring you and your loved ones peace, health and sweetness. Shana Tova U’Metukah.”
