An independent orthodox synagogue in north London has celebrated its 111th birthday.

On Sunday 18th of June, 150 members of Walford Road Synagogue in Stoke Newington gathered along with key leaders and well-known members of the Jewish community, including Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis, Lord Michael Levy, President of the Board of Deputies Marie van der Zyl and TV personality Vanessa Feltz.

Rabbi Mirvis noted that he has spoken at many other shul anniversaries all over the world, but this was the first time he had officiated at an 111th anniversary.

Walford Road synagogue chairman, Mr. Ike Albert said: “This is a very special place. When people come here, they feel happy, they feel wanted, they feel welcome”.

Lord Levy shared his memories of the time he and his family were active members of the shul, where his father, Sam Levy, had been the shamash for many years.

He outlined how he had first starting attending the shul at the age of 2, and that both his barmitzvah and wedding had been held there. He movingly indicated his mother’s place in the ladies gallery, and described how the shul had always been packed to the rafters.

The shul’s dedicated committee and members look forward to the continued success of Walford Road Synagogue.
