Student artists display work connecting them to Israel

Jewish students celebrated their connection to Israel through artistic expression, during the third annual Incubator exhibition.

More than 100 people joined young artists from 10 campuses across the UK, who presented their work at the event last week.

Entitled ‘Reflection – Young Jewish Identities in relation to Israel, through Art and Creative Writing’, the 13 students’ work included photographs, sculptures, a fashion show, a 3d Installation which streamed the live sounds from the Kotel, and for the first time, a spoken word performance.

The Incubator exhibition is the culmination of a programme run by Union of Jewish Students and UJIA. UJS Israel Engagement Officer, Emanuele Boccia, said it “is unique because of its incredible participants who come from so many different backgrounds and have produced so many different types of work.”

“Having student artists, photographers, fashion designers, sculptors, and so on, all together in one room is not something you see everyday. It also teaches us that we can positively engage with our Jewish Identities and relations to Israel through many different perspectives and each relation is unique in its own way.”

UJIA’s Robin Moss also spoke at the event, praising it, because it “combines deep engagement with Israel and Jewish identity with the incredible experience of seeing these students move from having creative ideas to creating their personal, powerful works.”

Participant Brianna Sommer, said she was grateful for “the incredible opportunity to explore our creative passions and share our personal Jewish identity as well as our connection to Israel, together with many other creative minds.”

In addition to presenting their work, students heard from artists Rutie Borthwick, Guy Shoham and Liron Weissman.

The event took place on Thursday 9 June in Camden.
