Sunday Masters review – week one
Sunday morning saw the kick-off to the new Masters season, and saw a returning win for Southgate Harmen, writes Jeremy Silverstone…
DIVISION ONE:
The veterans’ league season opened with a 4-2 win for the newly-amalgamated Scrabble Harmen against Faithfold, back in Maccabi Masters football after a break of a couple of seasons.
Andy Miller scored twice, with Jeremy Kornhauser and Jonny Summerfield also on target, Ben Simons and Jonny Mack replied for Faithfold.
Faithfold had fought back trailing 2-0, to come back to 2-2, only to lose out as Scrabble moved up a gear in the final twenty minutes to take the points. Faithfold manager David Garson admitted to being disappointed, but was philosophical in defeat, saying: “Whilst I would have hoped that we would have played better, the match was played in an excellent spirit, with a very good referee, and we look forward to being back in the Masters League.”
Reigning champions North London Raiders signaled their intentions with a 5-0 demolition of Waldaf Town. Tony Plaskow helped himself to four goals with David Lederman completing the rout.
DIVISION TWO:
A repeat of the Nathan Horwitz Cup Final played in May, EDRS again came out on top against Maccabi London Lions, with Tony Platman giving them the lead and, despite heavy pressure from Lions, Martin Siefert secured the win for EDRS with a breakaway goal.
Brady B also kicked off with a win as they edged out Hendon Harriers 4-3. Hendon led through Paul Herszaft’s goal against the run of play, but Brian Deal equalised to make it level at the break. Brady asserted themselves in the second half with further goals from Ashley Davidson and David Jacobs, and a second from Deal. Harriers kept up their challenge though, but despite a second from Herszaft and a debut goal for Barry Silkman, Brady held on for the points.
Temple Fortune earned a win against Zigzag Marshside as John Seigal’s double and Steve Bogen’s strike gave them a 3-0 victory.
