Suspected car ramming attack in Jerusalem leaves 5 wounded

Five people were wounded in a suspected car ramming attack on Monday in Jerusalem, just hours before Memorial Day for fallen soldiers and terror victims.

The suspected car ramming happened near the busy Mahane Yehuda market in Jerusalem.

Magen David Adom treated a 70-year-old male who was in serious condition, unconscious with multi-trauma injuries, one women in her 30 in moderate condition and tree men who were lightly injured, one 50-year-old and two 25-year-olds.

United Hatzalah volunteer EMT Tzvi Klein said the pedestrians were struck by a car. “Two people are in serious condition and one person sustained moderate injuries. Due to the nature of the incident, United Hatzalah’s Psychotrauma and Crisis Response Unit is on its way to the scene to treat people suffering from emotional shock,” Klein said.

The assailant, identified as 39-year-old Khatem Najma from the East Jerusalem’s Beit Safafa neighbourhood, was shot and neutralised on the spot.

“A few minutes ago, not far from here, there was another attempt to murder Israeli citizens. This terrorist attack, in this place, at this time, reminds us that the land of Israel and the State of Israel are acquired through many trials and tribulations,” Prime Minister Netanyahu said following the suspected attack.

“These terrorist attacks come with the expectation that they will overcome us and will uproot us from here, and if they could, they would murder us all. But they will not overcome us; we will overcome them. We have established an exemplary state with an exemplary army and police, at a heart-rending price,” he added.
