Swimming squad named for European Games

The junior swimming squad which will be representing Team Maccabi GB at this summer’s European Maccabi Games in Berlin has been announced.

GB’s swimmers have a proud history in the competition, with the last European Games in Vienna in 2011, seeing the squad claim an impressive 10 medals, which were won by the likes of Hollie Fisher, Trevor Pears and Naomi Ayrton. The latter’s sister, Rachel, has been selected for Berlin and will be looking to follow in her sibling’s footsteps. She will be joined by experienced JCC Maccabi Games swimmer, Daniel Schindler, who shone for Team MGB last summer in Cherry Hill.

The sole representational squad in the pool in Berlin, speaking about the selection and her expectations for the EMG,  swimming coach Samantha Russo said: “It’s an absolute privilege and honour to be leading the Team Maccabi GB Junior Swimming squad to Berlin this summer. We’ve got speed, we’ve got style and we’ve got loads of smiles in this young team! It’s an exciting experience for any athlete to represent their country at a major Games. I will be telling the swimmers that “Winners are not born in a comfort zone. They have to reach far, dig deep and push themselves!” I also think it’s crucial they enjoy themselves as this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
