Tel Aviv Pride: UK Embassy’s float features music icons including Elton John and Amy Winehouse

Envoy David Quarrey says theme for this year's event on 8 June includes music stars such as David Bowie and Freddie Mercury

David Bowie and Freddie Mercury on the UK's float design

The British Embassy in Israel this week unveiled the design for its float at the forthcoming Tel Aviv Pride event, celebrating the country’s LGBT community.

Ambassador David Quarrey said the theme of the floats for this year’s event on 8 June was icons of British music, including Elton John, Amy Winehouse, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury, “who have helped bring generations together”.

For the second year running, the British team is the only embassy with a float in the parade, and comes amid a wider ‘Visit Britain’ campaign dubbed ‘Love is Great.’

This week saw giant posters on the side of Tel Aviv hotels showing same-sex couples in a loving embrace, the wording under the image urging LGBT couples to “tie the knot” in the UK.
