A pioneering initiative from the Jewish Lads’ and Girls’ Brigade (JLGB) has already secured commitments from ten Jewish primary schools nationwide ahead of its launch this October.

Generation Resilience – developed in response to the mounting emotional and practical challenges facing young people – is fully funded by the UK government and delivered directly into classrooms for Years 5 and 6.

“Today’s Jewish children are growing up in the shadow of anxiety – from Covid disruption and the cost-of-living crisis to the rise in antisemitism since 7 October,” said Neil Martin OBE, JLGB’s chief executive. “Generation Resilience ensures they don’t just cope – they grow stronger. It’s fun on the outside, but deeply purposeful at its core.”

The weekly sessions, which can run during lesson time, lunchtimes or after school, are led by trained JLGB staff in participating schools. Activities focus on confidence-building, teamwork, planning, and communication, with added creative outlets through music, drama, and design. A strong emphasis on Jewish identity and British values underpins the programme, which is offered free to families and schools.

JLGB says the scheme also aims to support pupils’ transition to secondary education, with tailored Year 7 programmes being introduced in several Jewish secondary schools later this autumn.

A successful pilot at Sinai Jewish Primary School paved the way for wider expansion. Schools already confirmed include Etz Chaim, Matilda Marks Kennedy, Hertsmere JPS, Wohl Ilford Jewish, Clore Tikva and Clore Shalom.

The charity, which celebrates its 130th anniversary this year, is best known for delivering the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to the Jewish community, its award-winning eVOLve volunteering platform, and large-scale summer and winter camps.

Summing up its approach, JLGB says: “To them it’s chocolate. To us, it’s milk.”

Martin confirmed interest from additional primaries was already high. “With demand growing, JLGB is encouraging other Jewish primary schools to register now for the 2025/26 academic year. Only a limited number of places remain.”
