The top five Jewish News videos you watched in 2021

This year we became the first Jewish news outlet to publish regular video content — but which clips did you like best?

In 2021 Jewish News became the first Jewish publication in the world to add regular video content to its regular mix of the best news, analysis and features.

We published over 150 short clips and longer features over the past year both on our website and on social media.

They included the grim moment Jewish prayer books were torn up at the Western Wall, the happier appointment of Germany’s first military rabbi in a century and a profile of France’s far-right Jewish presidential candidate

But which were the most popular across the year? Grab a cup of coffee as we count back the top five.

5. An exclusive chat with Shtisel’s cast and creators

In the year our long wait for the third season of Shitsel was finally rewarded, Jewish News’s Brigit Grant brought together the cast and crew of the hugely popular Israeli drama.

The show – about a strictly-Orthodox family in Jerusalem – has proven to be a hit on Netflix, and thousands of you watched actors Reef Neeman, Hana Laslo, Zohar Strauss and Dov Glickman, together with director Alon Zingman and producer Dikla Barkai, discuss the show and its impact.

4. Tokyo Olympics remember 1972 Munich massacre victims

July marked the start of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, which opened to a nearly deserted stadium after a year’s delay because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was also the first time Olympic delegates officially recognised something different.

Delegates stood in a moment of silence to remember the Israeli victims of a massacre that took place in the Munich Games nearly half a century ago.

The widow of one victim told Jewish News she could not stop crying after the tribute for which she had campaigned for so long.

3. West Ham condemns video of fans’ antisemitic chant at Jewish man

It was an incident that went viral on social media: footage of football fans jeering at a strictly-Orthodox Jewish passenger as he took his seat.

The chant about Tottenham Hotspur, which references genitalia and circumcision, was sung by West Ham fans on the flight to Belgium, where their club was due to play a Europa League match.

Police made arrests after the incident. Ryanair never responded to Jewish News’s requests for comment.

2. The moment TalkSport presenters failed to call out Jew hate live on air

Another antisemitic remark brought on by football, another viral moment on social media.

This was when a caller to a radio station made an openly antisemitic remark about Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy – and the presenters did not challenge it.

Jordan Jarrett Bryan and  Perry Grovestwo radio station appeared surprised when the caller suggested Tottenham star striker Harry Kane would not be sold for a low fee because Levy “is a Jew, he’s not going to let him go for nothing, is he?”

The club said it was “appalled”.

1. Boris Johnson demonstrates why you should never wave your menorah about

Jewish News’s most popular video of the year came courtesy of the prime minister, who managed to break the menorah presented to him as a gift merely seconds before.

It happened at the Conservative Friends of Israel business lunch in November.
