Top seeded junior wins opening Wimbledon match

Taylor Fritz won his opening first round match in convincing style

American Taylor Fritz got his Wimbledon boy’s singles campaign off to a winning start on Monday afternoon.

The number one seed, who will be looking to follow in the footsteps of last year’s winner Noah Rubin, beat Great Britain’s Jay Clarke 6-3, 6-2 to set up a second round clash against Japan’s Sora Fukuda’s on Tuesday.

The 17-year-old from San Diego, who will also be competing in the doubles competition, most recently reached the final of the 2015 boy’s French Open, and made his first ATP Tour tournament appearance at last month’s Aegon Open Nottingham event.

Tuesday also sees Yoni Erlich bid to reach the semi-finals of the men’s doubles competition, which would match his best ever appearance at SW19. He and German Philipp Petzschner face the number two seeds, Croatian Ivan Dodig and Brazilian Marcelo Melo, they’re due third on Court 1.
