A Conservative MP has pledged to shave his head to raise funds for The Fed, the leading social care charity catering to Greater Manchester’s Jewish community.

Christian Wakeford, elected to represent Bury South at the December general election, has so far raised £330 of his £2,000 target.

He vowed this week to shave his head on 14 May to help the charity bear “increased costs they’re facing due to COVID-19” which he said was coupled with a significant fundraising drop.

He praised The Fed as a “brilliant local charity … caring for thousands of the most vulnerable people both in their Heathlands Village care home and in the local community.”

The charity said it was “delighted” by the MP’s support “through this challenging time.”

Separately, The Fed launched a joint emergency fundraising appeal earlier this month with Jewish Care and Nightingale Hammerson.

The three charities, which collectively care for more than 1,000 elderly Jews, are looking to raise “several million pounds” to combat the pressures posed to the elderly by the pandemic.
