Trampolinist Josh jumps to two more wins

by Andrew Sherwood

Trampolinist Josh Newman was celebrating a double win at the weekend, after he claimed gold in both the individual and synchro events in the 15-16 age group at the British Championships.

Held at the Echo Arena Liverpool, Josh won gold in the individual event for the fourth time in five years, while his win in the synchro – alongside Rhys Northover – was the pair’s third consecutive win.

Only able to prove his fitness on the Thursday evening, with him carrying a couple of niggles, he proved his fitness by completing two set routines and two voluntary routines.

He has though decided to miss out his final year as a junior, to instead go straight into senior men’s competition from the spring. His score at the weekend would have seen him medal in the senior event, and with it being an Olympic year in 2016, he believes the time is ready to step up to the seniors, with a view to reaching the Games for the 2020 edition in Tokyo, given he doesn’t turn 18 until January 2017.

Josh, who is unbeaten in this calendar year, has therefore decided to bypass the world age junior championships in Denmark in December, to instead concentrate on new routines for his 1st senior season in the spring. He has also made the finals of the Trampoline League being held at the Copper box Arena at the Olympic Park in November, his next major event and last as a Junior and will compete in both senior and Junior finals.
