Twitter brings 28 students from different faiths together for coding workshop

Twenty-eight Muslim, Jewish and Catholic schoolgirls took part in a joint coding session at Twitter’s London headquarters to mark International Women’s Day.

Pupils aged 11 to 13 from the Barnet Hill Academy, Hasmonean High School for Girls, Ursuline High School and Al-Zahra School all took part in the interfaith workshop.

Those taking part got to put questions to female engineers about their career journeys and seek advice on how to overcome challenges.

One student from Barnet Hill Academy said the workshop was “fantastic because I learnt so much and got to meet girls from different religions”. She added: “It is important to encourage young girls like me who have a passion for science to be more involved in events like this.”

Aya Bdaiwi from the Faiths Forum for London, which partnered with Twitter to deliver the workshop, said: “It was wonderful to see students asking important questions about each other’s communities.”

Only 23 percent of those working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in the UK are women, according to latest figures.
