Two new eruvs to be launched in time for ShabbatUK

Large swathes of north London will fall within two new Jewish religious boundaries – or eruvim – under proposals being launched in time for ShabbatUK.

One will stretch from Barnet in the north to Finchley Central in the south, incorporating Totteridge, Oakleigh Park, Whetstone, West Finchley, the new Millbrook estate and Woodside Park. It will link up with existing eruvim, in Mill Hill and north west London, and with the other eruv proposed, in Barnet.

The two shuls involved – Woodside Park and Barnet – are hoping to host pre-launch events on 31 October and 1 November respectively, with support from leading members of the London Beth Din.

Rabbi Barry Lerer of Barnet United said: “We have been working very hard on the Eruv, which will have a huge impact on our community, for a number of years. After all our hard work, it is great to know that we will be able to launch on ShabbatUK.”

Woodside Park Synagogue vice-chair Naomi Cohen said: “The creation of the eruv has been a dream to enable the community to push wheelchairs and buggies and carry Shabbat essentials. It is extremely rewarding and gratifying that after more than ten years, we will be able to launch the Eruv on ShabbatUK.”
