Two state solution is still ‘best option’ according to UK

The British Government has responded to Donald Trump’s confirmation that he is not wedded to the idea of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, saying it still believed this was the “best option”.

In a statement from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a spokesman said: “We welcome President Trump’s interest in working for a peace deal that meets the requirements of both parties.”

However, he confirmed that Trump’s apparent U.S. policy U-turn had not changed minds in Whitehall, saying: “The UK’s view remains that the two state solution is the best option to achieve that.”

Mainstream Jewish organisations in the U.S. rebuked Trump’s comments that he was “looking at” a one-state solution as well, with the American Jewish Committee reasserting that “a two-state solution is the only realistic resolution”.

Saeb Erekat, chief negotiator and Secretary-General of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO), said the only one-state solution would be “one single secular and democratic state with equal rights for everyone, Christians, Muslims and Jews, in all of historic Palestine”.
