SOMEONE famously once said: ‘Assumption is the mother of all screw ups’ – or words to that effect. And while it would be unprofessional for anyone at Hendon United to get complacent as they close in on the Premier Division title, last Thursday’s impressive 3-0 win over Brady did leave them believing they have more than one hand on the championship. Manager David Garbacz described winning that game as ‘overcoming a massive hurdle’, as they earmarked it as a potential banana skin. And having safely negotiated that, a performance full of grit and determination on Sunday morning saw them to the points against London Lions White, where they needed a 97th minute winner to snatch the points. Special praise went to Avidan Last, who despite suffering a broken nose, battled on a la Terry Butcher, to put his body on the line for the Hendon cause. Games and points are obviously still there to be won, but having picked up six points in less than 72 hours, complacency is now their biggest danger.

VETERAN swimmer Susan Halter continues to go from strength to strength as she added another three gold medals to her name. The oldest competing swimmer at the annual Guernsey Swimming Club championships, she claimed her latest trio in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke events. And while as she says her times may be getting slower, she’s still a sporting star in our community.

IT’S BEEN a case of unlucky 13 for the Israeli national football team after the latest FIFA world rankings have seen Eli Gutman’s side drop down 13 places to number 78. Sandwiched between Morocco and Haiti, they’re currently ranked higher than the likes of Belarus and Northern Ireland, though fall behind football luminaries such as El Salvador and Sierra Leone. Mexico in the Azteca await them next, expect a further slump when May’s list comes out.
