IT REALLY promises to be a super Sunday of football this weekend, and I’m not referring to the remotest possibility of Crystal Palace denying Chelsea a fifth league title. But if you can manage to draw yourself away from what will surely be another thrill-a-minute match, you could do a lot worse than get yourself down to Wingate & Finchley FC for the Cyril Anekstein Cup final. Norstar A are looking to complete a League & Cup double, while Hendon are hell-bent on ensuring lightning doesn’t strike twice and relinquishing another one of their trophies to their main rivals. As Hendon boss David Garbacz eloquently put it: “Defeat isn’t an option. We’ve let them get their hands on one of our trophies and will be doing everything to ensure they won’t get another.” His counterpart Rob Richman isn’t being as outspoken, just remaining quietly confident in saying confidence is high, and that beating them in the League has certainly helped boost that. What is for certain, is that we should be in for a treat. Kick-off is at 2.30pm, and is followed by the Barry Goldstein Trophy final between FC Team B and Los Blancos at 6.30pm. All four managers have also promised they’ll be playing strikers.

MACCABI LONDON Lions have announced that their new 200-seater stand will be called ‘The Alan Mattey Stand’ in honour of their late former player. A friend to many at Rowley Lane, Alan wore the club’s colours with pride for a number of years before sadly passing away in 2006 after a battle with cancer. Once described as having ‘the looks of Paolo Maldini, with the playing style of Vinny Jones’, he was renowned for his tough-tackling central midfield style, which was always paired with an infectious smile. Both his sons, Daniel and Jack have also played for the club, and the Mattey family have been incredible supporters of the club for a number of years and are shirt sponsors for all 34 Lions youth teams. A fitting tribute to a true club legend.
