Voice of Jewish Sport: Erlich’s putting smile back on Israeli tennis

ISRAELI TENNIS has waited a long time to have something to smile about. That smile was certainly evident on Tuesday evening after Yoni Erlich booked his place in the semi-finals of this year’s men’s doubles tournament at Wimbledon. Having watched all his games to date – and not wishing to put the mockers on him – the degree of control and authority both he and his German partner Phillipp Petzschner have exuded in their wins has been nothing short of outstanding. Tuesday’s dismantling of the number two seeds – and current French Open champions – was truly something to behold, and having heard him say after his first round victory how they can win the tournament, few would at least bet against the pair reaching this weekend’s final. That though will be the easy obstacle if they are to lift the trophy as standing in their way in the final will most probably be the greatest men’s pairing the game has ever seen in the Bryan brothers. However, the fact we’re even talking about an Israeli reaching the final of a Grand Slam is almost miraculous in itself.

AS PRE-SEASON training gets underway for the start of the new season, this coming Sunday sees Temple Fortune embark on their 40th consecutive season in the Maccabi League. Their schedule consists of training at Mill Hill Park, starting at 10.15am, which will then be followed by four friendlies, which start from the beginning of August.
