ISRAELI FOOTBALL football side Beitar Jerusalem has a reputation for its racist fans and their manager hasn’t helped to quench those flames by revealing he won’t play any Arabs in the side. Explaining his rationale, Guy Levy told Israel’s 102FM: “It would create much greater damage. Even if there were a player who fitted in professionally, I would not bring him in because it would create unnecessary tensions.” When asked if he thought bringing in an Arab player could potentially help change the racist culture of the fans, he replied: “Let the education minister change the culture and not ask us to change the culture of a people that is centuries old.” Saying his job was to “coach the team, not to educate anyone”, he also ended by praising the fans, saying: “I met La Familia recently, excellent people and fantastic fans. I respect the people who support my team.” Not exactly doing his part for Israeli-Arab relations.

IT MAY have taken an extra four days, and the conversion of one of the most controversial re-taken penalty’s in footballing history, but England’s U19 Women’s team have qualified for this summer’s European Championships, and can now look forward – to hopefully – a couple of weeks in Israel in July.
